Customize Blackboard
This page will acquaint you with personalization features in the overall Blackboard environment (not customizations to individual courses).
- Learn to edit your profile, including where to add a profile picture or change your password.
- See how to rearrange the courses on your course list. Move your current term courses to top and hide previous terms.
- Control the notifications Bb sends and customize when alerts are sent through the Retention Center.
Use the tabs above to open each topic.
Change Password
The first time you log into Blackboard, you'll want to change your password and set up your profile.
To change your Blackboard password, log into the LMS:
- On the My Online Courses page, find the Tools Module
- Choose Personal Information
- Select Change Password
Create Profile
Setting up your Blackboard profile is optional. Doing so allows you to customize your profile image which appears alongside your discussion posts and in other areas of the course. To create your profile:
- On the My Online Courses page, click on your name at the top right
- Click the Profile silhouette
You'll need to read through and check agreements. Don't forget to select "I am employed by" and enter MHCC. If you decide you don't want to deal with these steps, just exit. Once you have configured your profile, edit the image:
- Click the silhouette head
- select Settings and Privacy
- Browse for an image
Again, you are not required to customize your profile. Here's a link to Blackboard for more information about their Profile Tool.
Clear Retention Center Alerts
You may notice alerts in your Blackboard Global Navigation area. These may be triggered by institution announcements, instant messages from students (rare) or most commonly, preset criteria in your course Retention Centers.
Global Navigation Menu
Clearing alerts begins at the Global Navigation Menu found at the top of the My Online Courses page:
- Click your name at the top right of the Blackboard page. This takes you to the Global Navigation Menu
- Clear alerts in announcements or instant messages by clicking on the icons and reading messages
- To clear Retention Center alerts, select the 4th icon below your profile picture, the Retention Center arrows.
- Select the course name at the top below "Retention Center"
- Click the "Details" button
- Click "Customize" to reset the Risk Table rules
- In the Rules Center, select all rules and delete
You may decide to retain some rules for courses you're currently teaching, especially if you want to monitor student log-in or missed deadlines. It's recommended you delete rules for courses no longer in session.
Arrange Your Course List
Before the start of each term, you'll want to make sure your Blackboard course list is organized to facilitate navigating current and past shells. It's best to declutter your course list by hiding shells you don't need to readily access. Blackboard keeps all your courses for the last five terms, so you can always come back and reveal shells you've hidden.
- Begin on the My Online Courses Tab.
- Hover over the Course List to reveal the gear icon
- Click the gear icon
- Use the checkboxes on the left to select courses you want to reveal. Deselect for those you want to hide.
- Click hold and drag the arrows on the left to arrange your course list
- Click Submit at bottom right when finished.
